Trade-in for Charity

At Computer Help NZ we have always looked for ways to support our community - from charity donations, to sports teams sponsorship, to sending a large number of computers to charities in Zimbabwe.

Trade-in your old laptop, get a discount, and together we'll help community groups!

How You Can Help

Customers trade-in or donate older laptops to us which we then assess and if we find something suitable then we put it into the project. That laptop is then repaired, the drive is securely wiped and a new Windows Operating System is installed as well as some useful utilities and programs that will help the end users. The laptops are then tested to ensure they are working well and thoroughly tested.

The laptops are then offered to the following groups on a case-by-case basis, depending on what we have available. We look to help those in need and especially those struggling with funding. Some examples...

  • Community groups that work with at risk children
  • Families in dire financial difficulty
  • Mental Health support groups
  • Drug and Alcohol rehabilitation facilities
  • Suicide Prevention organisations
  • Older folk in isolation

What Happens to My Trade-In?

Customers who take part in our trade-in offer, or who donate a laptop, can be assured that their laptop will be put to good use, and their privacy secure, and also earn themselves a discount.

How much discount will you get? Either $150, $250 or $350 depending on the condition – we’ll discuss this with you, after we inspect your laptop.

What about my data? Once we’ve transferred all your data to the new computer (and completed a full backup!) we’ll securely wipe your old computer.

What if my old laptop is broken? We'll cover any basic repairs and pay for any parts required ourselves, before we donate to the Community Help Project. If the laptop is in too bad a state, we’ll recycle it instead. We work hard to minimize all e-waste as there is too much thrown away each year (over 76,000 tonnes)

What Happens To Parts That Cannot Be Used? Any laptops or parts of laptops that cannot be used are safely disposed of using approved environmentally friendly recyclers. This applies to all components that come through our repair shop.

Who We Currently Support

Below are a few organisations we currently support. Not listed are the individuals that we have been able to help with a free, refurbished laptop.

Cholmondeley Children’s Foundation: offer wrap-around 24/7 respite care for tamariki aged 5-12, outdoor activities, and learning experiences designed to foster wellbeing and resilience. Their service also supports whānau in their own homes with their community outreach Awhi Team. This is made up of social workers, youth workers and Whānau Ora Navigators to encourage and awhi whānau in their daily journey of life. In the 99 years Cholmondeley Children’s Centre has been in operation it has supported more than 33,000 tamariki across the Canterbury community. The demand for its services has only increased, as the rising cost of living puts pressure on whānau already living with added difficulties.

Ōtautahi Creative Spaces: is a mental health art support group based at Phillipstown Hub. It is for people 18+ who come from low socio-economic backgrounds and struggle with mental health/social/disability challenges. It is free for the artists to attend, as they don't want cost being a barrier for art! All materials are provided for the artists and there is a handful of staff who run the space. Funding has always been challenging for OCS, however over the past 12 months all Ministry of Cultural Development funding has been cut.

"The group is truly beautiful thing to be a part of. The change I see, not just within the other artists, but also within myself being a part of the space, is so special. It is my safe space, and many of the other artists space, where it's the only place we feel truly accepted and understood." - Samantha

RISE Ministry’s Trust: is a charitable trust which runs children’s holiday camp each school holidays for kids ages 8-10yrs. The camps are 5 days long and cater for around 80 children. The kids are fully funded by the trust, are nominated by their school or caregivers, and are normally from struggling homes who would benefit from a break and some solid input as well as some fun!
The camps are run by an amazing team of around 40 volunteers, ranging from 14 - 70yrs old. Their mission is to facilitate a week when the kids can have a holiday, see Jesus in action, and be loved and cared about like they may have not been before.
The schools report back to us that very often the change in the challenging kids' behaviour after camp is obvious, with a new positive and engaged attitude.

”Leaders also grow and learn a lot through camp as well. We have a lot of teens and youth leading, so we also run training weekends" - Rebecca
