The most significant step up in modern computing technology: Apple's M1

In today's world, it seems almost impossible to be shocked by any new computer technology. With the way computers are progressing, it feels almost inevitable that there will be a time when our wildest dreams can come true. Folding phones? Done. Insane cross compatibility within different devices? Sure. Internet speeds that make buffer time almost non-existent? Absolutely!

This wasn't always the case, though. There was a time not too long ago when technology was evolving so quickly that everything seemed like a surprise. Before smartphones were ever really a thing, visionaries used to dream about an all-touch mobile device. That was a goal they were working towards, and one man, in particular, was adamant about creating one. Steve Jobs debuted the first iPhone to the world and shot Apple into superstardom.

Today, Apple stands tall as probably the most popular single tech company in the world. Although of course, being at the top also means plenty of people don’t like them too! Let's talk about one of their recent inventions, which got a lot of press and is taking the world by storm, their M1 chip. This is one of those few things that can still surprise you in the tech world.

So what is the M1 Chip?

Well, if it wasn't obvious from the name, the M1 chip is a processor that is made by Apple. It's also called Apple Silicon, and it's made by the people at Apple themselves. This processor now goes in every Mac or MacBook that they make now.

That's not all, either. Apple has also expanded the M1 chip to its iPads, allowing people to experience the new technology in that new and slim form factor. These M1 chips have been really popular too, which has allowed Apple to sell a crazy number of laptops/PCs in the past few years.

What's so special about the M1 chip?

You must be asking, "It's just a chip with an abstract, vague high number. Why is it so popular?" Well, that's a valid question. But what's important to understand here is what Apple was using before the M1 chip and how this new situation is different.

Since 2006, Apple has been using external processors for their products. Intel has been providing Apple with processors (CPUs) which the company then uses to make their laptops and PCs. This, of course, was not ideal because an external chip puts a ceiling on customization. By creating a chip of their own (like they used to), Apple was not only able to customize it to their liking, but they were also able to make sure that they kept their costs low.

On top of that, the new chip allowed Apple to make it work alongside their already existing software ecosystem. This meant that by this slight change of customizing the processor, Apple was able to get a much improved performance for the power consumption, which is vital on mobile devices such as phones and laptops. The downside is that some older software will not run on it.

To conclude, the M1 chip has been a big change in the tech industry. It has forced Apple's competition to also consider making their own chips and try to emulate the success they've had. It is, simply put, the most significant innovation in the tech world today.
