Microsoft Deletes Documents

Microsoft has stopped distributing its latest feature update (version 1809) because it deleted documents on a number of Windows users computers and laptops. If you don't have Windows, then this doesn't apply to you.

Microsoft started rolling out the update during the company’s Surface event earlier late last week, but some Windows 10 users immediately noticed their documents were being deleted. “We have paused the rollout of the update for all users as we investigate isolated reports of users missing some files after updating,” says Microsoft on its support site for Windows Update. Once they sort out the issue, they will release the update again.

There are THREE things you should do.

ONE - If you have a message coming up on your screen to install an update, click 'no' or similar option - for a few weeks at least.

TWO - Backup. Make sure your documents are being backed up - have you checked your backup lately? We often find people think they have a backup only to find out, when they really need it, it's not been working. The simple solution is to test the backup drive on another computer.

If you don't have a backup we'd suggest you use the free app Veeam and set it to back up to an external Hard Drive. There are other good backup systems out there too, if you are not sure, let us know what you use, and we can advise.

THREE - To avoid issues in the future the best solution is to use the 'defer updates' option which is available on the Pro versions of Windows 10.
