McAfee on Your Computer?
Even the Inventor of McAfee Antivirus for Windows and Apple Mac computers, John McAfee thinks it’s awful.
Antivirus pioneer John McAfee has said the computer software he created was not really up to scratch. Responding to a question in a Reddit AMA, the self-described eccentric millionaire said: "McAfee is one of the worst products on the planet."
He gets huge numbers of emails and letters from frustrated computer users complaining about how slow and annoying their laptops and desktops are now after using his software – not realising that he left the company in 1994.
He produced an R16 video titled “How to Uninstall McAfee Antivirus”, in 2013 which has since got nearly 8 million views on YouTube. It’s pretty crude but also funny – in the end he “uninstalls” McAfee from his laptop by shooting it with a handgun.
McAfee, who is currently developing a range of privacy and security products under his new company Future Tense, said: "Everyone was calling me crazy, why not make a parody of myself, sniffing bath salts, etc." His wife also appears in the video.
When asked about Intel's decision to rename McAfee Security to Intel Security in 2014 following its acquisition of the company in 2010, McAfee added that he was pretty happy about the move. "You have no idea how glad I am about that. It's become the worst piece of **** on the planet. You cannot uninstall, scans all the time, slow as ****, I'd have fired them, thank goodness I've freed from association with that," he said.
John McAfee has also seen his fortunes change dramatically in that time with his fortune which peaked at around $100m plummeting to just $4m by 2007 following stock market and real estate crashes.
McAfee Antivirus was sold to Intel in 2010 for $7.68bn USD and its name was changed to Intel Security in 2014 in a bid to distance itself from the negative publicity around the computer software. Even Intel realised that McAfee is no good.
Right, you might be thinking – phew glad I don’t have McAfee installed. OR you might be getting a little upset (or even mad) because you DO. The good news is that it really isn’t too hard to uninstall McAfee – and doing so will improve your computer and prevent issues in the future.
Step 1. Go to the Control Panel of your computer.
Step 2. Click on “Uninstall a Program”
Step 3. Wait for the list of programs to show. Click on McAfee.
Step 4. Click “uninstall”
You may need to run the special uninstaller tool as this process doesn’t always remove all the junk that McAfee leaves behind.
