Messenger Is Closing Down - Kinda

Meta is closing the stand alone website messenger.com on April 16th – thus making a change to how Messenger works on computers. Again.

The standalone Messenger website (messenger.com) is being removed. If you’ve been using that on your laptop or desktop computer, you’ll now be redirected to Messenger inside Facebook instead, so you’ll need a Facebook account.

Messenger itself is not going away. You can still use it:

  • on your phone (unchanged)
  • through Facebook on your computer

This is essentially a shift away from Messenger as a separate platform, and back into Facebook.

What This Means For You

For many people, this won’t have a major impact. But if you regularly use Messenger on a computer and don’t have a Facebook account, you may notice a few differences.

It’s No Longer Separate

Previously, Messenger could be used on its own -  just messages, nothing FB.

Now, it sits inside Facebook. That means:

  • You have to sign up with FB
  • more clutter & more notifications
  • potential distractions

It’s different, and frustrating to have to change, even though the core function is the same.

Mobile Is Still Good

The Messenger app on your phone won’t be changed and still is the most straightforward way to use the service.

For many people, still use the desktop version but will now have to change. Ahh – computer life! Always changing!

Practical Tips

If this change catches you out, a few simple adjustments can help:

  • Go straight to facebook.com/messages to access your inbox faster
  • Use your tablet phone for quick replies
  • Be aware that Facebook has a lot more distractions than just messenger!

Conclusion

Nothing is being removed but Meta is closing and folding things into one place.

For most people, it will just take a bit of getting used to.
