Microsoft Updates Breaks Edge

Microsoft Updates Breaks Edge

If you are running Windows 10 or 11 and use Edge as your browser, you may have noticed it’s not working. You’ve double-clicked on the Edge icon on your computer, but nothing happens. It just sits there.

Microsoft Edge version 105.0.1343.25 is the culprit (quite a mouthful!) and many computer users have had this trouble.

THE SOLUTION

The fix is a bit nerdy, so if you get stuck, please pop it into our workshop or call to get one of our techs out. If in doubt, DO NOT PROCEED, as editing your registry can be dangerous!

  1. Open Windows Registry Editor. (Click on the Start Menu and type “regedit” and then choose the option that comes up.
  2. Open up the + boxes and find your way to “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge” or “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge”
  3. Look for “MetricsReportingEnabled” and delete related entries.
  4. Close Registry Editor.
  5. Reboot your computer.

Why does this fix it? The “MetricsReportingEnabled” entry on your computer was created by the old internet browser policies and is no longer required. Edge crashes only when this entry is present in the computer system, which is why we recommend deleting it.
